Okay, let’s clear the confusion, you haven’t missed the deadline (yet). The due date to file your Income Tax Return for Assessment Year 2025-26 has been extended to 15th September 2025.
This extension applies only to taxpayers whose returns do not require audit. This includes most individuals like salaried employees and those with small income from freelancing and businesses.
What if audit is required?
If your accounts need to be audited, the due dates remain unchanged i.e. 31st October 2025.
Taxpayer type | Deadline |
---|---|
No audit required | 15 Sept 2025 |
Audit required | 31 Oct 2025 |
Belated/Revised return | 31 Dec 2025 |
What if you miss the deadline?
You’ll have to pay a late fee under Section 234F:
- ₹1,000, if total income is up to ₹5 lakh
- ₹5,000, if income exceeds ₹5 lakh
You will also not be allowed to carry forward losses or switch regimes if you miss the deadline.
