Hello @Private,

For export of services, IEC is not mandatory unless the service provider is taking benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.

Hope this helps!

No, you do not need an Import Export Code (IEC) when selling web design products or services that are purely digital in nature and do not cross borders. For compliance and banking purposes, you may need to register under the Service Export category if you are exporting digital services internationally. For updated requirements, please consult your local trade or tax authority.

:puzzle_piece: 1. What is an Import Export Code (IEC)?

The IEC is a 10-digit code issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). It is mandatory for businesses involved in the physical import or export of goods outside India.

:laptop: 2. Web Design = Service, Not Goods

Web design, website development, SEO, or digital products (like templates or software) are considered services, not physical goods.
These fall under Service Exports (as per RBI and DGFT), and IEC is not required for such exports.

:money_bag: 3. What You Need Instead

If you are selling to international clients (for example, through Fiverr, Upwork, or direct contracts), you’ll need:

GST registration (if turnover exceeds the threshold).

Export declaration under LUT (Letter of Undertaking) if you want to avoid charging GST on foreign invoices.

Foreign payment gateway like PayPal, Wise, or Razorpay International to receive payments.

Invoices mentioning “Export of Services” and payment in foreign currency (USD, EUR, etc.).

:globe_showing_europe_africa: 4. When IEC May Be Required

You might need an IEC only if:

You are exporting physical goods (e.g., printed marketing materials, branded merchandise, etc.).

You are involved in importing/exporting software or digital goods on physical media (CDs, drives).

But for purely online web design services, IEC is not required.

:white_check_mark: Summary

Activity IEC Required? Notes
Web design or digital services :cross_mark: No Treated as “Export of Services”
Exporting physical goods :white_check_mark: Yes Mandatory for customs clearance
Receiving foreign payments online :cross_mark: No Use PayPal, Wise, or similar
Selling software or templates online :cross_mark: No If digital delivery only

No you don’t need an Import-Export Code (IEC) if you’re selling web-design services online. These are considered export of services, not physical goods IEC is only required for physical import/export.

Thanks all for the information but this is consider as digital software/product.
