EPF Interest Calculation for ITR Filing in excess of 2.5 Lakhs

:bar_chart: EPF Taxable Data for FY 2024–2025

Description Monthly Contribution Non-Taxable (₹) Taxable (₹)
Total Contribution (FY 2024–25) ₹ 2,81,963 ₹ 2,50,000 ₹ 31,963
Interest (upto 31/03/2025) ₹ 73,284 ₹ 72,624 ₹ 660

:white_check_mark: As a non-government employee, any EPF contributions exceeding ₹2.5 lakh/year are taxable, along with the interest earned on that excess contribution. This interest is usually taxed under “Income from Other Sources.”

:red_question_mark: My Questions / Doubts:

  1. How should I pay tax on the total excess EPF amount of ₹32,623 (₹31,963 contribution + ₹660 interest)? Should I pay tax only on the interest (e.g., 8.25% of ₹31,963), or on the full ₹32,623 as per my income tax slab?
  2. Is this taxable amount automatically reflected on the Income Tax website (e.g., in Form 26AS, AIS, or the pre-filled ITR)?
  3. How can I check if any TDS was deducted by EPFO on the taxable interest?
:small_blue_diamond: Note: As per the EPF website, “In case taxable interest is less than ₹5,000/-, then TDS will not be deducted.”
Since my taxable interest is only ₹660, it’s likely no TDS was deducted — but how can I confirm this (e.g., through Form 26AS or AIS)?
  4. Is there a separate issue if my total employer contribution across EPF, NPS (self-contribution), and superannuation exceeds ₹7.5 lakh in the financial year?
:small_blue_diamond: If yes, how do I check this, and how is the excess taxed?
  1. Tax is payable on interest from excess contribution ( Rs. 660 only) .

  2. It will be added to your Income from other source & will be taxable as per slab rate.

3 TDS , if any will be reflected in Form 26AS and aslo auto filled in your ITR
4. Employer contribution has nothing to do with interest taxability
