After filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), the Income Tax Department processes it to verify your income, deductions, and tax calculations. As your return moves through different stages, tracking your ITR status helps you know exactly where your return stands and whether any action is needed from your side.
How to track your ITR status?
If you want to see your ITR status, here’s how you can track it.
-
Log in to Income Tax Portal
-
Navigate to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns
-
You’ll see the current status of your ITR
You’ll also see the acknowledgment number, it’s a unique reference for your return that helps you track your refund or resolve any issues related to your filing.
Understanding ITR status types
Once you’re on the ITR status page on the Income Tax Portal, you’ll see a label against your return. That status is just the department telling you exactly where your return stands in the process. Here’s what the different statuses mean:
1. Submitted and pending for e-Verification
Your ITR has been filed but not yet verified. You need to complete e-verification through any of the available methods (Aadhaar OTP, EVC, net banking, etc.) or send a signed ITR-V to CPC Bangalore within 30 days.
2. Successfully e-Verified
Your return has been verified, but processing hasn’t started yet. The Income Tax Department will now begin checking your return.
3. Under Processing
The Centralized Processing Centre (CPC) is reviewing your return. This includes validating your income, deductions, TDS credits, and tax calculations against their records. No action is needed from your side at this stage.
4. ITR Processed
Your return has been successfully processed. The department has completed its verification and accepted your return. If a refund is due, it will be initiated shortly.
5. Processed with Refund Determined / Refund Due
The department has calculated your refund amount and forwarded it to the refund banker for processing. The refund will be credited to your pre-validated bank account within a week. To track you tax refund status, you can follow this guide here.
6. Refund Issued / Refund Re-issued
Your refund has been sent to your bank. It should reflect in your account within a few days. If not, contact your bank to confirm.
7. Refund Failure / Unable to Credit Refund
The refund couldn’t be credited due to incorrect bank account details (wrong account number, IFSC code, or unvalidated account). You need to update your bank account details and raise a refund reissue request through the portal.
8. Processed with Demand Due
The department found that you still owe taxes after processing your return. You’ll receive an intimation notice explaining the demand. You must pay the outstanding amount within 30 days.
9. Defective Return (u/s 139(9))
Your return has missing, incomplete, or inconsistent information. The department will send you a notice via email explaining the defect. You have 15 days to correct and resubmit the return. If you don’t respond, your ITR will be treated as invalid.
10. Case Transferred to Assessing Officer
The CPC has transferred your case to the jurisdictional Assessing Officer (AO) for detailed scrutiny. The AO may contact you for additional documents or clarification. This typically happens when there are complex issues or discrepancies.
11. Refund Not Determined
After processing your return, the department determined that no refund is due to you. This could be because your tax liability equals your tax payments, or a demand is due.
12. Rectification Filed
You’ve submitted a rectification request to correct an error in your processed return. The department is reviewing your request.
