Imagine this: You’re working remotely for a US-based company, and getting paid in dollars. Because it’s a foreign income, the US deducts tax before paying you.
But you’re still a resident taxpayer in India, which means you have to report that income here as well.
Now the big question is: Do you have to pay tax on the same income again in India?
Not if you’ve filed Form 67.
So, what is Form 67?
Form 67 allows resident taxpayers to report foreign income that has already been taxed abroad and claim Foreign Tax Credit (FTC) in their Income Tax Return.
This credit is available because India has tax agreements with many countries, called Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAA), to make sure the same income isn’t taxed twice.
For that, you’ll need to fill out Form 67 with details like:
- The type of foreign income earned
- The amount of tax paid overseas
- The name of the country where it was taxed
- And the tax payable on that income in India
You must file Form 67 before filing your ITR under Section 139(1) to claim the Foreign Tax Credit
