Everywhere I see the last date to file ITR is 31st July 2025, but after logging into the account I don’t see the option to file ITR for AY 2025-26. Anyone knows when can we start filing ITRs?
Hi @vaibhav ,
The notified forms have been released recently by the Income Tax department. However, the utilities for filing ITR are not yet release by e-Filing unit of the department. Once the utlities are released then only filing can start.
Hope this clarifies.

I know many of you are wondering when you can start filing your income tax return. Here’s what you need to know.
The tax filing season officially begins only when the e-filing utilities are released by the Income Tax Department.
For some context — every year, the CBDT first notifies the ITR forms, and only after that does the Income Tax Department release the utilities — the digital tools most chartered accountants and tax professionals use to file returns. And for those who file their ITR themselves via the Income Tax Portal, that typically opens up shortly after the utilities are released.
Now, the ITR forms for AY 2025–26 have been notified, but the utilities aren’t live yet. That means: you can’t start filing just yet.
FYI, CBDT has introduced several changes in the new ITR forms this year. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Compared to last year, there’s a slight delay — and based on past timelines, I expect the utilities to be released in 1–2 weeks.
Even after the utilities are live, it’s a good idea to wait a bit and ensure everything’s functioning as expected.
Another important point. If your TDS was deducted during FY 2024–25, we suggest starting your filing around 10th June.
That’s because the key documents required for ITR filing, like:
- AIS (Annual Information Statement)
- TIS (Taxpayer Information Summary)
- Form 26AS
get updated with data from banks, RTAs, employers, and other financial entities. Most of them file their data by early June. For instance, the deadline to file Q4 (Jan–Mar) TDS returns is 31 May.
Also, if you’re a salaried taxpayer, you’ll also need to wait for Form 16, which employers issue by 15 June.
So realistically, mid-June is when everything falls into place.
It’s best not to rush and file before that, as it may lead to:
- Missing TDS credits
- Mismatches with AIS or 26AS
- Having to revise your return later
Lastly, it’s important to choose and file the correct ITR form. Here’s a detailed guide to help you pick the right one for AY 2025–26.
